The Extreme Reasons Why Women Join The Garment Industry In Bangladesh: An Account Of The Victims Of Rana Plaza Collapse
This article is derived from my research work1 with the victims of 2013's Rana Plaza crush2. In Bangladesh the ready-made garment (RMG) industry, the highest grossing export industry of the country, has created a plethora of employment opportunities for millions of impoverished population, especially for our female labor force. Although the garment industry has had numerous positive impact on Bangladesh's national economy the RMG sector, at the same time, has always been surrounded by clouds of controversy. Garment industry workers face unsafe work condition, verbal and physical abuse, inhuman work hours, low and unsteady wages, threat of employment termination daily in their place of work.
