Maize is one of the most important cereals in Kenya mostly grown by smallholder resource poor farmers in fields of less than 1 ha. Maize faces a number of abiotic and biotic stresses amongst which includes maize lethal necrosis disease (MLND). The disease initially reported in Bomet has spread across all maize growing regions of Kenya affecting a majority of the commercial varieties. Only 2 varieties DH 04 and DUMA have been reported to have resistance against the disease in Kenya. MLND has also spread to neighboring countries such as Uganda, Tanzania and Democratic Republic of Congo.
