Evaluation Of Reduced Glutathione As A Marker Of Oxidative Stress In Sickle Cell Disease Patients In A Tertiary Hospital In Nigeria
Background: Oxidative stress plays a very significant role in the pathophysiology of sickle cell disease (SCD) and associated complications. Glutathione levels be used to estimate the degree of oxidative stress and thus predict the need for anti-oxidant therapy in the management of SCD. This study aims to assess the role of oxidative stress in the pathophysiology of vaso-occlusive crisis (VOC). Methodology: This was a longitudinal study conducted at the University of Benin Teaching Hospital, Benin City, Edo State between April 2018 and August 2019. Thirty-five SCA patients and 35 age and sex matched controls participated in the study.
