This paper examines the use of standardized precipitation index (SPI) for drought intensity assessment in north-eastern Nigeria with a view to evaluate whether SPI can serve as better indices for drought assessment in North-Eastern Nigeria. Adopting descriptive statistics and SPI computation to drought situations and comparison of SPI with actual rainfall and rainfall deviation from normal in seven selected station in north eastern Nigeria. The results of the SPI values in all the stations showed that all the seven station within the study area revealed with a positive SPI mostly in May, June, July, August and September, and a high negative rainfall deviation from normal in January to Decemb
