The Language In Education Quandary In Uganda: Whose Task?
Uganda has about 65 native languages from which six area languages are recommended as medium of instruction (MOI) in schools. In addition, over six foreign languages (for example; English, French, Germany, Chinese, Latin and Kiswahili) are taught in Ugandan schools for various reasons and not necessarily recommended by the education policy. It is in Uganda where you find a foreign language taught to a child in early grade, who has not even mastered his or her mother tongue. We have it in mind that, elsewhere in Africa and the world, there are countries (Cameroon,Nigeria, India, and Canada among others) which have bigger numbers of languages but with proper and clear-cut policies.
